About Cambium Learning

Cambium Learning Group makes educational technology that actually helps students and teachers. They’re behind well-known brands like Learning A–Z, ExploreLearning, Voyager Sopris Learning, and VKidz. The focus is always on personalized, research-based instruction—whether it’s reading, math, science, or homeschool programs. Simply put, they build tools that make learning work better for everyone.

Role Overview

This is a summer internship on the machine learning team, focused on automated scoring of Spanish written responses using transformer-based deep learning models. You'll be comparing different approaches, running experiments, and helping improve how educational assessments are scored. It's ideal for Master's or Ph.D. students in data science, CS, linguistics, or educational measurement who already have some NLP experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with psychometricians and data scientists to define a real research problem • Design an experiment, run the study, and write up what you find • Write Python code using ML frameworks to ingest, clean, and model text data • Build models and evaluate results using standard metrics like QWK, accuracy, and SMD • Document your work, archive your code, and present your findings to the team • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team—discuss methods, results, and ideas openly

Qualifications & Requirements

• Enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program—Data Science, Computer Science, Linguistics, Educational Measurement, or a related field • Some experience working with text and natural language processing (NLP) tools • Able to write clean, useful code in Python • Comfortable working independently but also good at team collaboration

Must-Have Non-Negotiables

• Currently enrolled in a grad program (Master's or Ph.D.) • Hands-on experience with NLP or text-based ML projects • Python coding skills—you can actually build and evaluate models • Ability to work remotely within the United States • Strong documentation and communication skills

Nice-to-Have Skills & Bonus Qualifications

• Familiarity with written Spanish (this will help a lot) • Experience with transformer-based models (like BERT or multilingual versions) • Background or interest in educational measurement or psychometrics • Past work on automated scoring or constructed response items

Perks & Employee Benefits

• Fully remote—work from anywhere in the US • Real research experience, not busywork • Work alongside PhD-level psychometricians and data scientists • Contribute to projects that impact real students and teachers • Flexible summer schedule built around a full-time commitment • Opportunity to publish or present your work internally
